ChatGPT Ads: how advertising in ChatGPT works, and how to get started (2026)

ChatGPT now shows ads. Since February 2026, OpenAI has been placing sponsored ads below ChatGPT's answers for Free and Go users, and advertisers can buy them self-serve through ChatGPT Ads Manager.

This guide covers who sees the ads, what they look like, how targeting and bidding work, how to set up a campaign, how to measure it, whether it's worth testing — and, if you came here for the other meaning, how to use ChatGPT with your existing ad accounts.

The short version

  • →Ads appear below ChatGPT's answers for logged-in Free and Go users and in logged-out ChatGPT — not for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu, and not for under-18s.
  • →Ads are matched to the conversation's context, guided by the context hints you supply — they aren't exact-match keywords.
  • →Buy on views (CPM), clicks (CPC) or conversions. OpenAI suggests starting at $3–$5 per click; the US minimum daily budget is $25.
  • →Sign up at ads.openai.com with your ChatGPT login — Ads Manager can draft your first ad from your website.

1. What ChatGPT Ads are

ChatGPT Ads are paid placements inside ChatGPT. OpenAI began testing them in the United States on 9 February 2026 and has since opened self-serve buying in many more countries.

An ad appears as one clearly labelled unit below a ChatGPT response, separate from the answer. OpenAI is also testing a multi-image ad format that appears while ChatGPT generates an image. OpenAI says ads run on systems separate from the chat model and that advertisers can't shape, rank or change ChatGPT's answers.

2. Who sees ChatGPT ads

  • Shown to: users on the Free and Go plans, and in logged-out ChatGPT (where only ads appropriate for all audiences run).
  • Not shown to: Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu accounts, or accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.
  • Not shown near: sensitive topics, including personal health, mental health and politics.
  • Personalisation: users can turn ad personalisation off; ads then use only the current conversation. Personalised ads aren't initially available in the EEA or Switzerland.

Advertisers don't get access to users' chats, chat history, memories or personal details — only aggregated performance figures such as views and clicks.

3. The ChatGPT ad format

Each ad below a response includes:

ElementWhat it is
Advertiser nameYour brand name, shown with the ad
FaviconYour logo
TitleThe headline
CopyThe description
ImageThe creative asset
Landing pageWhere the ad sends people

Because the ad sits under an answer to a specific question, it reads best when it continues that conversation — a clear, specific offer rather than a brand slogan.

4. How targeting works

There are no keyword lists in the search-ads sense. ChatGPT's ad system picks ads based on expected relevance and outcomes, using the context and intent of the current conversation, your ad's landing page, title and copy, your targeting selections, and — when the user has personalisation on — signals from their wider ChatGPT use.

At the ad group level you can add context hints: descriptions of the conversations, topics or keywords where your product is relevant. OpenAI is explicit that these guide matching but are not exact-match keywords and don't guarantee delivery in particular conversations. Qualifying advertisers can also add negative phrases for brand-safety requirements.

5. How bidding, pricing and budgets work

ObjectiveHow you're chargedUse it for
ViewsPer thousand impressions (CPM), with a maximum CPM bidReach
ClicksPer valid click (CPC), with a maximum CPC bidTraffic
ConversionsOptimised toward a conversion event; with click billing you pay for valid clicks, not conversionsSales and leads

Bids are set at the ad group level, and OpenAI recommends starting CPC bids at $3–$5. Ads compete in a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, so a more relevant ad can win against a higher bid.

A daily budget is an average over a Sunday-to-Saturday week: a single day can spend up to twice the daily budget, and the week up to seven times it. The standard minimum daily budget in the US is $25; other markets have their own minimums.

6. How to advertise on ChatGPT: getting started

  • 1. Check availability. Self-serve Ads Manager is available in many countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India and most of Europe. The legal entity being billed must be based in an available country. Larger advertisers can go through OpenAI's ads team or partners.
  • 2. Sign up at ads.openai.com with the OpenAI account you use for ChatGPT.
  • 3. Start from your website, or skip it. Enter your URL and Ads Manager drafts a first ad and campaign for you to review — or go straight to Ads Manager and build it yourself.
  • 4. Get the account details right. Country, currency and time zone can't be changed after the account is created.
  • 5. Set up billing and submit. Ads go live once they pass review and billing and campaign settings are complete. One person should create the account and invite everyone else.

Check OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page for the current country list — it's changing quickly.

7. Measuring ChatGPT Ads

  • In Ads Manager: impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. Impressions, clicks and CTR refresh about every 15 minutes; spend can lag 7–8 hours.
  • Conversions: set up conversion measurement in Ads Manager to track sales or leads.
  • UTM parameters: add them to landing page URLs so ChatGPT Ads traffic shows up in GA4 and your other analytics.
  • Watch for crawler visits: ad-review crawlers may visit your landing pages with the tracking parameters attached. Analytics may count them as paid visits, but they aren't billed clicks.

8. Is ChatGPT advertising worth testing?

It's a new channel, so there are no reliable benchmarks yet — anyone quoting typical ChatGPT Ads ROAS is guessing. What's clear from how it works is where it's likely to fit:

  • Good fit: considered purchases where people ask ChatGPT to compare options — software, travel, financial products, higher-priced ecommerce.
  • Weaker fit: impulse products, and anything in the sensitive categories where ads don't run.
  • How to test: a separate budget you can afford to learn with, UTM-tagged landing pages, a clear conversion event, and a comparison against the same offer on search.

9. The other meaning: using ChatGPT with your ad accounts

If you came here to use ChatGPT to analyse or manage your Meta or Google ads, that works through MCP connectors. OpenAI's help center says custom MCP server connections — including actions that change things — are available on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu, where admins add the connector for the workspace.

Meta's ads MCP server works with any MCP-compatible AI agent, and GoMarble's hosted MCP connects Meta, Google, TikTok and your store to ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor through one connection. For a full walkthrough of the routes, see Claude for Meta Ads and Claude for Google Ads — the options are the same for ChatGPT.
