The short version
- →Advantage+ automates audience, placements and budget inside a campaign — let it, unless you have a specific reason not to.
- →Automated rules handle simple if-this-then-that guardrails: pause, notify, adjust budget or bid.
- →AI agents handle what rules can't: working out why something changed and proposing the fix.
- →Meta limits how often things can change — 4 budget changes per ad set per hour — so over-eager automation fails.
1. The four layers of Meta ads automation
| Layer | What it automates | You control |
|---|---|---|
| Advantage+ (Meta's AI) | Audience, placements, budget across ad sets, creative variations | Goal, budget, guardrails such as minimum age and exclusions |
| Automated rules | Pausing, notifying, budget and bid changes when conditions are met | Every condition and action |
| Scripts and API | Anything the Marketing API can do, in your own code | Everything — and the maintenance |
| AI agents | Monitoring, diagnosis and proposed changes | What the agent can do, and what needs approval |
2. What Advantage+ automates
Advantage+ is Meta's end-to-end automation. It comes as three campaign types — Advantage+ sales campaigns (formerly Advantage+ shopping campaigns), Advantage+ app campaigns and Advantage+ leads campaigns — which apply AI across audience, placement and budget.
A campaign counts as Advantage+ only when all three levers are on:
- Advantage+ campaign budget — manages budget across ad sets to get the best results.
- Advantage+ audience — combines your customer knowledge with Meta's AI to find the most relevant audience, within limits you set such as minimum age, location and exclusions.
- Advantage+ placements — finds the most cost-effective placements across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Audience Network and more.
Turn any one off and the campaign drops out of Advantage+. Advantage+ creative is separate: it generates variations — image expansion, text variations, animation and more — some of which are on by default, so review previews before you publish.
3. How Meta's automated rules work
Automated rules check your campaigns, ad sets or ads against conditions you set and take an action when they're met. You create them in Ads Manager from the Campaigns table or the Automated rules page. Through the Marketing API, rules can also run on a schedule — daily at midnight in the account's timezone, hourly, every half-hour or custom — or trigger as soon as the data changes.
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Turn off / turn on | Pause or restart a campaign, ad set or ad |
| Send notification | Alert you without changing anything |
| Adjust budget | Raise or lower a daily or lifetime budget |
| Adjust bid | Change a manual bid on an ad set |
| Rotate ads | Pause the active ad and switch on the next one (via the API) |
| Rebalance budget | Pause matching ad sets and move their budget to the rest (via the API) |
Rules are good guardrails — "pause any ad that spends twice the target CPA with no purchases" — and poor strategists. They can only do what you anticipated.
4. Third-party automation and AI agents
Rule engines
More flexible rules than Ads Manager offers — comparing metrics, custom metrics, duplicating winners, running the same rules across many accounts.
Bulk launchers
Upload creative in bulk, copy campaign structures across accounts and make bulk edits. They automate operations rather than decisions.
Scripts and API integrations
Your own code against the Marketing API. Fully flexible, fully yours to maintain.
AI agents and MCP connectors
AI that reads your reporting, works out what changed and why, and proposes or makes changes. Meta's own ads MCP server lets AI assistants manage ads, and since July 2026 admins can set rules limiting what agents may do — read-only, or no budget changes.
5. What to automate, and what to keep
| Automate | Automate with approval | Keep manual |
|---|---|---|
| Targeting and placements (Advantage+) | Budget increases on winners | Offer and creative direction |
| Alerts on spend spikes and CPA jumps | Pausing ad sets | Launch strategy and testing roadmap |
| Pausing ads with no conversions after a set spend | Shifting budget between campaigns | Account structure |
| Daily and weekly reporting | Launching new campaigns | Anything that changes the brand |
6. The pitfalls that break automation
- Edit limits. Meta's Marketing API allows an ad set budget to change only 4 times an hour, an account spending limit 10 times a day, and one edit per object every 30 seconds. Automation that reacts to every wobble hits these quickly.
- Too much editing. Frequent significant edits are widely reported to send ad sets back into the learning phase. Give changes time to work before the next one — see our guide to the Meta ads learning phase.
- Rules acting on thin data. A rule that pauses an ad after one bad morning kills winners. Require a minimum spend or conversion count before a rule fires.
- Rules fighting each other. One rule raising a budget while another pauses the same ad set is a common, avoidable mess. Keep a list of what each rule touches.
- Switching Advantage+ off by accident. Turning off any of the three levers takes the campaign out of Advantage+.
- Automating without explanations. Rules tell you what they did, not why performance moved. Without diagnosis you're automating reactions, not decisions.
7. Google Ads automation, briefly
Google's built-in automation follows the same layers:
- Smart Bidding — Maximize conversions, Target CPA, Target ROAS and Maximize conversion value, set per auction.
- Performance Max — one goal-based campaign across all Google Ads inventory.
- Automated rules — change status, budgets and bids, or send emails, when conditions are met.
- Google Ads scripts — JavaScript that runs hourly, daily, weekly or monthly for reports, bid changes and multi-account work.
- Auto-apply recommendations — lets Google apply selected recommendation types; you can turn it off at any time.
The same rule applies: let Google's bidding run, automate the guardrails, and keep structure and strategy for people. For search-specific work, see AI for PPC specialists.

8. How GoMarble helps
GoMarble AI Agents sit on top of Advantage+ and your rules: they watch the account, work out why it moved, and propose the change.
| What you need | How GoMarble does it |
|---|---|
| Diagnosis before action | Agents trace a change to the campaigns, audiences or creatives responsible before proposing anything |
| Control over every action | Each action — budgets, pausing, turning ads on or off — is set to Allow, Ask or Block, with account scope and budget limits |
| Across channels | Meta alongside Google, TikTok and your store, so automation sees the whole picture |
| A record of every change | Task logs show the agent, the approver and what Meta returned |
| Where you work | Alerts and approvals in Slack or email |
